Observation no. 42

The small weather of city trees

The plane trees along the canal do not all experience the same afternoon. One stands in full sun, another in the draft between two houses, a third collects the day’s dust on its leaves.

Walk slowly enough and the street breaks into tiny climates. The air cools beside the water. A doorway gives off yesterday’s heat. Under one tree, for no obvious reason, it has begun to smell like rain.

Perhaps this is why a familiar route never stays entirely familiar. The world is always making small revisions.
